| Steve Martin (The
Out-of-Towners) plays Bobby Bowfinger, a
struggling filmmaker desperately trying to get
his big break in Hollywood before his 50th
birthday. After reading a script from his
production companys accountant and
part-time receptionist, Bowfinger thinks he may
have hit paydirt with a sci-fi thriller about
aliens landing on earth inside of seemingly
harmless fat droplets of precipitation. Its
called Chubby Rain (seriously), but the
only way Bowfinger can make the movie is if he
casts action superstar Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy, Holy
Man). Of course, Ramsey is not
interested in the picture. So Bowfinger decides
to shoot the film around Ramsey without the star
knowing about it. The results are hysterical, as
Bowfingers ragtag acting crew continually
approach the alien-fearing Ramsey and babble
lines about extraterrestrials, causing the
entertainer to seek refuge at an upscale
psychological boutique called Mind Head (where
Ramsey is taught to "Keep It Together,"
or K.I.T., by Episode One baddie Terence
Stamp).
Bowfinger,
trying to finish his film while Ramsey is in
seclusion, casts a look-a-like named Jiff (also
played by Murphy) to film the remaining
close-ups. Jiff, who formerly was unpacking boxes
of french fries at the local Burger King, sounds
like future Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn and has
thick glasses and braces. His first scene is to
race across a busy L.A. freeway toward the
camera, begging the question "How did he get
across in the first place?" Frank Oz (In
& Out) directs an original script from
Martin (remember he wrote Roxanne and L.A.
Story?).
